Eagle Pass and Maverick County has continued to experience a steady stream of construction activity in the first quarter of 2009. This positive trend has been occurring in community over the last several years. By April 2009, permits for several new single family homes, multifamily housing structures, a home health facility and a commercial retail building were issued. Also a regional health care facility is undergoing expansion at its main headquarters in Eagle Pass. To date, in 2009, the total construction valuation in Eagle Pass has reached $12.7 million.
In 2008, Eagle Pass and Maverick County saw construction activity in residential, commercial and industrial development. The total value of this new construction was $25.7 million. The new developments included commercial office buildings, multiple tenant shopping centers, a national retail store, warehouse space, and single-family housing residential units.
This development activity was also evident in 2006 and continued into 2007 when construction values reached $28.8 million and $26.4 million respectively. Presently, Eagle Pass/Maverick County is experiencing growth in the new construction of single family housing, retail establishments, financial institutions, office buildings, warehouse space and new health care facilities. These new facilities have spurred new employment in the retail, health care and law enforcement sectors. Homeland Security and Law Enforcement
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has expanded its presence in the community with the completion of the $11.9 million Eagle Pass Border Patrol Sector Headquarters located on El Indio Highway FM 1021 in Eagle Pass, Maverick County. The new 300–agent Border Patrol Station facility features various buildings and site improvements on 38.79 acres. Several hundred new Border Patrol agents will be added to the community. The Eagle Pass North station will maintain its location on Highway 277 in Eagle Pass.
The $40 million Maverick County Detention Facility opened in late August 2008. The facility is operated by The Geo Group, Incorporated which is the largest private detention center management group in the United States. The Maverick County Detention Center is a 654-bed facility owned by Maverick County. The facility will house local county inmates as well as contracted federal and or state prisoners. The Geo Group is under a three-year management agreement with Maverick County. The detention facility will generate approximately 180 new jobs with a payroll of $5.5 million.
Warehouses and distribution centers are being constructed or they are being expanded and renovated in order to address the growing trade industry. Daniel B. Hastings, Inc. Licensed Custom Brokers, which is headquartered in Laredo, Texas, has constructed a $3.5 million, 112,000 square foot facility in Eagle Pass.
